In this article, you will learn how to add 'Discussions' and their configuration so that students can use them as a kind of forum to exchange views and opinions about a topic you have previously created.

    What are Discussions

Canvas offers a built-in Discussion system that enables instructors and students to create and engage in multiple Discussion topics. This feature facilitates interactive communication among two or more participants, allowing users to exchange ideas within an entire class or a specific group.

How to add a new Discussion

To add a new Discussion, go to the 'Modules' section and click on the '+' icon in the top right corner of the module where the new Discussion will be added. A pop-up window will appear, allowing you to add a new item to the selected module. From the drop-down menu, select 'Discussion', then click '[ Create Topic ]' in the box below. Enter a name for the Discussion and click the 'Add Item' button at the bottom of the window.

After adding the Discussion, it will appear in the list of items within your Module. You can easily reposition it by dragging and dropping it to the desired location.

The new Discussion will also be added to the 'Discussions Index' page. You only need to click on the 'Discussions' link in the course Navigation menu. From there, you can view a complete list of Discussions in your course, filter them to display all or only the unread ones, and search for specific Discussions by title or keyword. You can also start a new Discussion and manage its settings for the entire course.

    How to edit Discussions

To be able to edit it, please click on it to access it and hit the three-dot menu in the top right corner. You can add some instructions and configure it by going through the different options, and once finished, save it.
