Files
In this article, you will learn what 'Files' are and how to add and manage them.
What are Files
The Files feature in Canvas serves as a centralised storage space for assignments and other materials. It allows you to upload single or multiple files, manage their details, preview content, control visibility, set usage rights, and restrict access as needed.
Access to files varies based on your role and is divided into three main areas:
User Files – Found in your profile, containing personal files.
Course Files – Located within each course you are enrolled in.
Group Files – Available within groups where you are a member.
How to add new Files
You can expand your Files by uploading new documents. Students can upload files to both your personal and group file storage. These files can be utilised for assignments, discussion responses, and message attachments. Moreover, any files stored in your user or group files can be embedded in Canvas through the Rich Content Editor.
How to manage Files
The available file management options depend on the specific file area. These include:
Searching for files: Files can be easily located by searching for their name.
Adding a folder: Create new folders to organise files. Folders can also contain subfolders.
Uploading a file: Add new files to the system.
Setting usage rights (copyright): In courses and groups requiring usage rights, files must have designated rights before publication. Files without this setting will display a warning icon.
Managing file visibility: Files can be set as published, unpublished, or restricted.
